Extracellular Vesicles Explained: Exosomes, Microvesicles, and More

Exosomes belong to a broader family of particles called extracellular vesicles (EVs). Understanding where exosomes sit within that family clears up a lot of terminology confusion. This overview is provided for educational and research purposes only.

What are extracellular vesicles?

Extracellular vesicles are membrane-bound packages that virtually all cell types release into their environment. They are studied as carriers of molecular cargo involved in cell-to-cell communication. The EV family is usually grouped by size and how the vesicle forms.

The main categories

  • Exosomes — small EVs, generally 30–150 nm, formed inside the cell within multivesicular bodies and then secreted.
  • Microvesicles — typically larger, formed by budding directly from the cell membrane.
  • Apoptotic bodies — larger still, released by cells undergoing programmed cell death.

Why the distinctions matter for research

Because categories overlap in size, careful characterization is what lets researchers describe a preparation accurately. When a supplier refers to MSC-derived exosomes, the supporting size and marker data are what substantiate the term.
