Exosomes are extracellular vesicles — nanoscale packages (roughly 30–150 nm) that cells release into their environment. Each one carries molecular cargo, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids such as messenger RNA and microRNA.

When an exosome reaches another cell, it can deliver this cargo, influencing how the recipient cell behaves. Researchers study this signaling role in processes like tissue repair and inflammation. Because exosomes are cell-free, they are examined separately from cell-based approaches.
