MSC Exosomes vs PRP: How They Differ and What the Research Shows
Clinics exploring regenerative options often compare MSC-derived exosomes with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Both are studied in regenerative research, but they are fundamentally different materials. This overview is for research and educational purposes only.
What each one is
PRP is prepared from a patient’s own blood, concentrating platelets and the growth factors they release. MSC-derived exosomes are nanoscale extracellular vesicles (roughly 30–150 nm) secreted by mesenchymal stem cells; they are cell-free and carry signaling cargo such as proteins, lipids, and microRNA. Exosomes are not stem cells and are supplied as an acellular product.
Key differences
- Source: PRP is autologous (from the patient); MSC exosomes are produced from screened donor MSC lines and supplied as a characterized material.
- Consistency: PRP composition varies patient-to-patient; characterized exosome lots are documented with a per-lot Certificate of Analysis.
- Form: PRP contains cells and platelets; exosomes are cell-free vesicles.

Both are studied in preclinical and laboratory research for signaling involved in tissue repair and inflammation.
